India’s Oldest University to be Recreated

India’s Oldest University to be Recreated

The Indian parliament is set to discuss potential legislation which would recreate Nalanda University in the Indian state of Bihar. Nalanda University is well known in India as one of the world's oldest universities. While much of its ruins still remain, this Buddhist academic learning centre was mostly destroyed more than 800 years ago.

At its peak, Nalanda University taught about ten thousand students from across the Asian continent. However, Turkic forces destroyed the university in 1193.

With backing from the Indian foreign ministry, the Singaporean government and even Amartya Sen, the Nobel laureate for Economics, the restoration of Nalanda University is set to once again attract students from across Asia, like China and Singapore. Although India consists of a Hindu majority, Bihar and the Indian government are committed to promoting Buddhist culture and learning through this historic university.

The Innovations Universities of India

The Indian Ministry for Human Resource Development plans to organize a round-table to discuss the idea of Innovation Universities in India, as per the Innovation for Universities Bill 2010. There have been a number of various arguments for and against the Bill, as the former Vice-Chancellor of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore, N.R. Madhava Menon, suggested there would be several difficulties with implementation although a number of intelligent Indian students and academics would be attracted to the idea.

Nevertheless, there is still a lot of cynicism and doubt from Indian academics about the initiatives of the Indian Government with regards to the education sector and Indian universities. In additional, SASTRA University based in Tamil Nadu, argued that this grouping of Innovation Universities in India could result in the closure of other top Indian universities that may not be a part of such a grouping.

India’s Universities Can Help UK Students

India’s Universities Can Help UK Students
© Karmalize
Britain's education leaders and business employers are claiming that there aren't enough students in the United Kingdom with experience in foreign languages and different cultures around the world. As a result, there are suggestions that British students should soon engage in more exchanges around the world, including at Indian universities.

These plans are aimed at increasing the employability of UK students as there seems to be less and less of them with international experience of other countries. After the UK Universities Minister David Willets recently visited India, he now wants increased joint undergraduate and postgraduate courses between UK and Indian universities. This will allow students from both countries to do exchanges in the other country, while giving more worldwide exposure to British students.
